In Vitro Vascular Physiology and Metabolism Lab

The In Vitro Vascular Physiology and Metabolism laboratory at Skidmore College supports faculty and student research aimed at:
  1. investigating how blood vessels function in both 健康 和疾病, and
  2. investigating how mitochondria (energy producing part of cells) function in 健康 和疾病. The two major methods by which we explore these questions are through:

Dissection 2014   Dissection 2 2014
Left: Professor Stephen Ives dissecting and mounting mouse aorta onto wire myograph chamber for study investigating the mechanisms of a high fat diet on blood vessel 健康. Right: Cheyanne Slocum, 2017, measures tissue weight for subseqent mitochondrial respiration measurements.

Isolated Vessel Wire Myography

Used to perform pharmacological experiments on isolated blood vessels under various physiological conditions (such as those seen during exercise) or comparing populations, 比如老化.

Wire Myography
Keldwin Taveras, 2017, and Josh Kalloo, 2017, generating pharmacological dose response curves in mouse aorta.

Permeabilized Tissue Assessment of 线粒体l Function

Used to perform pharmacological experiments on isolated tissue under various physiological conditions (such as those seen during exercise).

线粒体
Cheyanne Slocum, 2017, performing mitochondrial respiration measurements in mouse skeletal muscle.
